Character Background
• History: (She's obscure enough no Wiki-history exists, so I'll have to wing this one, sorry mods! Though some of her canon story is viewable on this page, if you want some delightful background.)
Delilah Dirk was supposed to grow up as any young woman would in early 19th century England. (Or, at least, this near-parallel with slight fantasy elements thus far.) She was meant to be a demure, quiet girl. This is absolutely not what happened.
Though much of her early life has not yet been revealed in canon, at some point in her youth and teenage years she began to travel around the world, picking up skills and having adventures long before she became a known figure - adopting the pseudonym Delilah Dirk to better suit her new self. Increasingly, her adventures have begun to tie her into the Napoleonic Wars - occurring more or less as they would have on our Earth.
So far, she exists at the periphery - but after being accused of being a French spy (by the actual French spy, naturally) she's been pulled more into the political world of England and the war. This is entirely against her wishes - Delilah's course has been to adventure in the classic sense of Tintin or Indiana Jones or Adele Blanc-Sec - travelling the world, righting wrongs in whatever way seems to fit. Sometimes a bit...piratically, it must be admitted.
• Core Relationships:
Erdemoglu Selim - Up until meeting Selim, Delilah's adventures had been solitary. But after robbing the corrupt Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Delilah brought her erstwhile captor - and then imprisoned in turn - Janissary friend with her. Owing her his life, Selim now comes along on her adventures - something tolerated but then cherished over the course of time, though Delilah would likely herself not be entirely able to express why. It might have something to do with Selim being a teamaster and Delilah having some parts of her English upbringing she can't shake.
Parents - Her father, deceased, was a travelling English ambassador, and always encouraging of Delilah's energetic, adventuring spirit. She still holds his memory close to her heart. Her mother, a Greek artisan, and her were estranged for some time based on the same-said adventuring, but in recent years have reconciled. Though far away, either literally or figuratively, they are the people who made her in, again, literal and figurative ways - her personality was very much shaped by their raising of her, and she loves them dearly.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
Selim - The addition of Selim to her life has caused a significant improvement, though one she has accepted begrudgingly at first. He has proven to be positive by being a moderating influence on Delilah, who is otherwise quick to take the first course of action to come to mind. Selim, in effect, is a sort of mental senate in the best parliamentary sense - a house of sober second thought. And a certain amount of clever planning has settled into her otherwise fiery personality as a result of his influence.
Going Home - In going home to England, Delilah was able to reconcile the two disparate people she was (this was the main emotional plotline of one of the graphic novels) - the English noble's daughter, and the adventuress Delilah Dirk. Her relationship with her mother had been fraught since her father's death, in part because Delilah had continued on her adventurous path - stubbornly and mistakenly believing her mother wouldn't approve, and would want her to live the life of a 'respectable lady.' When they finally met again, it became clear that her mother's disapproval revolved entirely around the lack of safety in her daughter's life, but also her deep respect for who Delilah had become. The reconciliation seemed to calm some of Delilah's nature, or at least make her thoughts of home no longer hold the negative weight they had in the past.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Spy Accusation - This is the one that filled her with rage and, in the bargain, granted her an arch-nemesis. British officer Jason Merrick frames Delilah for his own spying activities in Spain, causing her to vow revenge. There is a significant amount of anger in someone like Delilah, and this raised it to a fever pitch - a feeling Merrick reciprocated. He has since become her archnemesis, someone who angers her enough to draw her consistently off course to deal with him.
The Dutchman - While stealing into a Turkish castle (as part of a plan to allow a refugee ship safe haven denied by the corrupt governor), Delilah and Selim made the acquaintance of a Dutch journalist, van Hassel. At first, van Hassel seemed an ally, stroking Delilah's ego by publishing stories of her adventures. This lulled her usually sharper instincts, as flattery had never been deployed as a weapon against her - he was really after his own gain, nearly killing Delilah, Selim, and dignitaries from half of Europe through his arrogance and cowardice. It's a lesson Delilah vowed to learn from.
